Independent Living Services for Older Blind (ILOB) Ohioans

The loss of vision is a challenge connected to aging, but the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission (RSC) can help citizens overcome this challenge and maintain their independence.  RSC specialists have the expertise to help Ohioans meet their specific needs through:
  • Optical aids such as magnifiers and lighting devices;
  • Training in the use of adaptive aids and equipment;
  • Mobility instruction; and
  • Daily living skills training.

ILOB program clients and their families have access to information on typical problems caused by declining vision and the solutions to those problems.

Eligibility:
In-home assistance is provided to Ohioans who are:

  • 55 years of age or older;
  • Ohio residents;
  • Facing difficulty maintaining independence because of vision loss documented by an optometrist or ophthalmologist;  and
  • Residing at home or in an assisted living facility.

Starting the Process:
A call to RSC will result in an in-home appointment to determine specific needs of each client.  Family members are encouraged to participate in this process. They also learn the skills and the assistive technology that keeps older blind Ohioans living independently.
